Types of Skin Cancer

There are three main types of skin cancer, of which, melanoma is one of the most serious and potentially life-threatening.

Two other types of skin cancer are Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC).

Three types of skin cancer discussed here, all get their name from the type of cells they originate from in the skin. Melanomas from melanocytes, basal cell carcinomas from basal cells and squamous cell carcinomas from the squamous cells.

MELANOMA

Melanoma can be a fast-growing cancer, so being vigilant about changes on your skin and having regular skin checks (even in winter) is crucial to early diagnosis and treatment.

If you notice a new mole or spot, or one that has started to change in shape, size texture, then do not delay in booking a Skin Check (link).

Melanoma

Nodular Melanoma, another severe form of melanoma can be pink, red, brown or black as an elevated, firm and fast-growing lump and needs immediate attention.

Nodular Melanoma

Do not wait a few weeks to see if it goes away! Every day is critical in successfully treating melanoma. Melanoma only accounts for 2.3% of all skin cancer diagnoses but 75% of skin cancer deaths.

Take some time to know the spots and bumps on your skin so that any changes or new spots can be checked by our medical practitioners.

BASAL CELL CARCINOMA

Basal cell carcinomas (BCC) are the most common form of skin cancer and the least dangerous. BCCs are slow growing and are usually found on the head, neck and upper torso. The colour can vary from pale skin colour to red and might seem like a recurring sore that fails to heal correctly.

SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA

Squamous cell carcinomas tend to grow slowly, over several months, on the skin that is most exposed to the sun. SCCs can bleed, scab up or become ulcerated and are usually appear like thicker, red, crusty skin. They are less dangerous than melanoma but can spread to other parts of the body.
